Get Ready To Swing Those Golf Clubs!

It might be time get back to working on that golf swing and that short game, because 30th Annual John Trimble Fund Golf Tournament for Autism is in the horizon. The annual tournament will be held on Monday, July 26, 2010 at Crestwood Country Club in Rehoboth, MA. Early bird registration is now available by clicking here.

The 30th Annual John Trimble Fund Golf Tournament for Autism, and the final tournament that Joe will host, promises to be a memorable and intimate engagement. For three decades, Joe’s hard work and dedication has been steadfast and constant. Now that the golf tournament is crossing the milestone of a 30th year, the pressure is on to make it one of the best yet and thank Joe for his help and dedication.

Joe organized the state’s first charity golf tournaments in 1980 in honor of his son, John, who was one of the Groden Center’s first students. Thanks to Joe’s help, The Groden Network has raised well over $500,000 for The John Trimble Fund, which supports equipment, enrichment materials, field trips, and special recreation opportunities for Groden Center students and clients with autism and related developmental disabilities.

The Groden Network and Mayor Cicilline Host Art Exhibit

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — On Dec. 10, The Groden Network “Your Autism Experts” and Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline hosted a unique photography exhibit at City Hall featuring the collective works of children with autism and related developmental disabilities from The Groden Center. The exhibit, entitled My Own World, was held at The Gallery at Providence City Hall.

The event was a triumph for local artists with autism and related developmental disabilities who proudly displayed their photography to the public.  The highlight of the night was when Mayor Cicilline and Dr. June Groden awarded the local artists with trophies and citations for their art. For some of these artists, the exhibit was truly an exhilarating experience.

My Own World is a unique photography project that teaches photography to children with moderate to severe autism and related developmental disabilities. Inspired by positive psychology theory and research, the focus of the My Own World project is to increase the self-esteem and the resilience of students with autism and their families by recognizing the artistic strengths of the students. The works explore what the artists find interesting and intriguing. For many of them, photography is a new way to communicate ideas and seek new ground. By presenting their photography work in the community, artists with autism have the opportunity to become active members of their community and gain significantly from the community's appreciation.

Works from the My Own World program have been previously presented at several art exhibitions, including the Autism Society of America's annual conference, the annual Rhode Island Flower and Garden Show at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, and at the Tsetse Gallery in downtown Providence. A background on the project can be found at http://www.grodencenter.org/groden-center/myownworld.

The project is funded in part through grants from the Rhode Island Council on the Arts. Since 1967, The State Council on the Arts has helped foster growth of the state’s arts community by providing educational opportunities in the arts, actively supporting and encouraging the expansion of the state’s cultural resources, and promoting and protecting freedom of artistic expression. For more information on the council, please visit their Web site at http://www.arts.ri.gov/.

Dr. June Groden Lectures at International Web Science Conference

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Dr. June Groden, Co-Executive Director and Co-Founder of The Groden Network “Your Autism Experts,” was a featured speaker at this year’s BioConference Live, a online-only three-day event that focused on a collection of scientific disciplines. The event featured live video keynote presentations from life science thought leaders.

Dr. Groden was among five autism experts from throughout the country presenting at this year’s BioConference Live on Nov. 17. She was joined by national experts Dr. Mary Stewart of Heriot-Watt University, Dr. Daniel Messinger of Miami University, Dr. Judy Van de Water of the University of California-Davis, and Clara Lajonchere of Autism Speaks. Her lecture, Stress and Coping in Autism, described a theoretical framework for the usefulness of the stress construct in understanding, assessing and treating autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This presentation, based on her successful book of the same name, provided a source for future theoretical, education, clinical, and research use of the stress construct in understanding and treating ASD and other developmental disabilities.

The 7th Annual In Step For Autism 5K Walk and Family Field Day

What had promised to be a gloomy Sunday morning unexpectedly turned out to be a perfectly beautiful day for a long stroll in the park.

On Oct. 4, 2009 at Colt State Park in Bristol, R.I., about 200 friends of the Groden Network “Your Autism Experts” and The Autism Society of America – Rhode Island Chapter came together to put their best foot forward. Thanks to the hundreds of feet that stepped across the park, The Groden Network was able to raise thousands of dollars for the support, care, and services of children and adults in Rhode Island with autism and related developmental disabilities.

Local celebrities who came in support of the Groden Network include WJAR NBC 10 Meteorologist R.J. Heim; Paws, the lovable mascot of the Pawtucket Red Sox, and the Barrington Volunteer Fire Department. Prior to stepping out across the park, R.J.’s speech inspired walkers to give their all for a good cause.

Upon their return from the far reaches of the park, walkers were greeted with a great lunch filled with hundreds of hamburgers, hot dogs, and slices of pizza, thanks to the Rego and Riding families. Children with a little energy leftover from the long walk took to the field for the annual field day activities.

Be sure to join us at the 8th Annual In Step for Autism 5K Walk and Family Field Day, which is scheduled for Oct. 3, 2010 and will also be held at Colt State Park in Bristol.
